ABSTRACT

Abstract Backgroud Homocitrulline (Hcit), is involved in the pathological processes of some diseases. However, the role and function of Hcit (CBL) in human skin remains largely obscure. Objective To investigate the correlation of the level of Hcit in seborrheic keratosis, skin aging, and its clinical significance. Methods Immunohistochemistry was used to analyze the level of Hcit in skin lesions of seborrheic keratosis (SK), unaffected skin (distant 0.5 centimeters from SK lesion), and normal skin of healthy subjects in the control group. ELISA test was used to detect the serum level of CBL in SK patients and healthy subjects of different ages. Results Hcit was mainly localized in the nucleus of epidermal cells. In healthy control skin, the expression of Hcit increased with age and showed a positive correlation with age (the correlation coefficient was 0.806, p = 0.0002). The expressional level of Hcit in SK lesions was higher than that in healthy control skin (Z = −3.703, p = 0.0002). The serum level of CBL in healthy subjects and in SK patients increased with age (the correlation coefficient were 0.5763, p = 0.0032; 0.682, p = 0.004. respectively). The serum level of CBL in SK patients was higher than that in healthy subjects (Z = −2.19, p = 0.030). Study limitations The small serum sample size in the study. Conclusion The high expressional level of Hcit is correlated with seborrheic keratosis and skin aging. HCit may be one of the potential biomarkers of skin aging.

ABSTRACT

Skin quality deteriorates with age for various reasons, including hormone deficiencies. In women, the decline in estrogen levels during menopause plays an important role in skin degeneration, with consequent atrophy, collagen reduction, loss of elasticity, and impaired wound healing. Research has demonstrated the beneficial effects of topical phytoestrogen in preventing and repairing skin aging, with localized action and without side effects. The objective of this study was to review the relevant literature, demonstrating that this can be a safe and effective alternative for treating the skin of perimenopausal women.

ABSTRACT

AND Facial Rejuvenation AND Skin Laxity Treatment".

Introduction: The increase in average life expectancy leads the population to seek, with greater frequency, aesthetic treatments aimed at rejuvenating the face and neck. Microfocused ultrasound (MFU) is described as a non-invasive treatment option for facial sagging and aging. Objective: To review the scientific literature regarding the use of MFU in the process of facial rejuvenation and correction of sagging skin. Methodology: This is a narrative review of the literature, based on the search for scientific articles in the PubMed and Virtual Health Library databases carried out during the month of March 2022, using the following search strategy: "Microfocused Ultrasound AND Facial Rejuvenation AND Skin Laxity Treatment". A total of 19 manuscripts were included in a qualitative synthesis. Development: MFU can be applied to the subcutaneous tissue, producing small points of thermal coagulation within the middle to deep reticular layer of the dermis and subdermis. The application of heat to these discrete points of thermal coagulation causes collagen neosynthesis and consequent skin tightening. Recent studies have shown promising results regarding the application of MFU in regions of the nasolabial sulcus, jaw line, eyebrows, infraorbital region, lower eyelid and zygomatic-buccal retention ligaments. Final considerations: MFU has been shown to be a safe technique, being considered effective, non-invasive, well tolerated by patients and viable for clinical medical and dental practice.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Despite of being a natural physiological process, aging is considered a degenerative process with evident effects on aging skin, such as reduced elasticity, wrinkles, reduced facial fat and muscle tone, sagging, changes in facial contour, and sarcopenia on the face. These changes can generate social stigma, suffering, and psychological discomfort for the patient. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES), a technique used in physical therapy for muscle training, in attenuating the signs of facial aging. For this purpose, a scientific survey of publications indexed on the Medline (PubMed), CINAHL, Embase, PEDro, Lilacs, ERIC, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases was conducted and, based on pre-established criteria, two relevant publications for the topic were selected for discussion. The scientific literature regarding the use of NMES to attenuate the signs of aging is still very scarce. The survey showed the need to discuss the current state of knowledge. Our results suggest that, theoretically, NMES could be a promising method to attenuate the signs of aging; however, there are still no conclusive results regarding the clinical effectiveness of using NMES in the facial muscles since few studies relate NMES to facial rejuvenation. More studies are needed, with greater methodological rigor and low level of bias, using precise techniques in the evaluation and allowing to interpret with greater scientific commitment of the physiological mechanism of the muscular stimulus and its interrelation with the integumentary system, proving its effectiveness in the improvement of skin appearance.

ABSTRACT

Treatments that attenuate the effects of hypoestrogenism in menopausal women have been gaining visibility. This study investigated the skin response to a phytoestrogen-enriched cosmetic formulation created by incorporating a biotransformed soybean extract (BE) into a cream-like matrix. Collagen-I expression was analyzed both in vitro (fibroblast cells) and ex vivo (skin explants). The results revealed an increased amount of collagen-I both in fibroblasts and human skin when treated with BE and BE-incorporated cream. Also, this collagen-I overexpression was inhibited by PHTPP, indicating a dependence on estrogen hormone receptor beta (ERβ) signaling. Moreover, BE was not harmful to skin microbiota, showing a promising nutricosmetic potential. Thus, this work presented a fully functional cream-like formulation that was shown to be safe and effectively increase collagen-I levels both in vitro and ex vivo.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The skin is a complex organ highly vulnerable to aging, a phenomenon that biologically causes changes at the tissue and cellular level. Usually the histological elements that characterize it are described with a qualitative approach, without taken age into account, however from the quantitative point of view, this aspect that morphometry makes possible has not been addressed in all its potentialities. Objective: To characterize the behavior of morphometric indicators such as perimeter, area, nuclear volume in the cells of the spinous layer of the healthy epidermis, according to age and sex. Methods: A case series study was carried out with 12 patients diagnosed with histopathology of basal cell carcinoma treated at the Oncology Center of the Provincial University Hospital Vladimir Ilich Lenin of Holguin, in the year 2019 and to which the tumor was removed by means of an excisional biopsy that included the lesion and a broad border of healthy skin. Theoretical and empirical methods were used, the latter based on techniques morphometric, then statistical analysis of the data obtained was performed and were reflected in tables. Results: As age advances the nuclear perimeter, area, and volume decreased in both sexes. Conclusions: Both the perimeter, the area and the nuclear volume decrease in the cell of the spinous layer of the healthy epidermis in both sexes as age advances, which translates into a decrease in nuclear size.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, collagen peptides (CP) have become a research hotspot in delaying chronological skin aging. Animal experiments have shown that CP can repair chronologically aged animal skin by promoting collagen synthesis, inhibiting collagen degradation, and increasing antioxidant enzyme activity. Cell experiments showed that CP can promote proliferation of fibroblasts and synthesis of collagen and elastin by stimulating nuclear factor-κB signaling pathway and transforming growth factor-β/drosophila mothers against decapentaplegic signaling pathway. Clinical studies have demonstrated that long-term oral supplement with CP or CP in combination with other antioxidant active substances can increase the skin moisture content and reduce transepidermal water loss, improve skin wrinkles and elasticity, as well as improve the skin collagen fiber structure, dermal and epidermal quality and the overall condition of facial skin. This review summarizes recent studies on mechanisms underlying chronological skin aging and mechanisms of action of CP in repairing chronologically aged skin, in order to provide a theoretical basis for further clinical research into and application of CP in repairing chronologically aged skin.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: UVB irradiation can cause acute damage such as sunburn, or photoaging and melanoma, all of which are major health threats. Objective: This study was designed to investigate the mechanism of skin photoaging induced by UVB radiation in mice through the analysis of the differential expression of miRNAs. Methods: A UVB irradiation photoaging model was constructed. HE and Masson special stains were used to examine the modifications in the epidermis and dermis of mice. The miRNA expression profiles of the mouse skin model exposed to UVB radiation and the normal skin of mice were analyzed using miRNA-sequence analysis. GO and Pathway analysis were employed for the prediction of miRNA targets. Results: A total of 23 miRNAs were evaluated for significantly different expressions in comparison to normal skin. Among them, 7 miRNAs were up-regulated and 16 were down-regulated in the skin with photoaging of mice exposed to UVB irradiation. The differential expression of miRNA is related to a variety of signal transduction pathways, among which mmu-miR-195a-5p and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signal pathways are crucial. There was a significant differential expression of miRNA in the skin of normal mice in comparison with the skin with photoaging induced by UVB irradiation. Study limitations: Due to time and energy constraints, the specific protein level verification, MAPK pathway exploration, and miR-195a-5p downstream molecular mechanism need to be further studied in the future. Conclusions: UVB-induced skin photoaging can be diagnosed and treated using miRNA.

ABSTRACT

Currently, facial aesthetic changes and dissatisfaction with self-image are influences that motivate the search for quick, non-surgical and less invasive cosmetic procedures. For this reason, the demand for patients looking for orofacial aesthetic procedures is increasing. The objective of this study was List the complications resulting from orofacial harmonization procedures through a systematic literature review, identifying which types of complications and areas are most affected. The following databases were searched: Medline (PubMed), SciELO, Scopus, Cochrane, Lilacs and Web of Science, from March to September 2020, selecting the studies that presented the following inclusion criteria: original studies in humans, about complications after orofacial harmonization procedures. Thirty-three studies from the literature were selected that presented reports of complications in patients after the orofacial harmonization procedure in the forehead, nose, eyes, periocular region and lips. Even the execution of less invasive facial cosmetic procedures can cause possible immediate or late complications after the procedure, especially in the periocular region and eyes. It is important to make professionals aware of this possibility beforehand.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Cutaneous xerosis presents a high frequency and can generate, in addition to discomfort, changes in the visual and sensory appearance of the skin, as well as an increased risk of injury occurrence. Upon instituting systematic and daily examination, it is possible to contribute to injury prevention by identifying risks. Objective: To map the scientific evidence on conditions related to the risk of injury occurrence in elderly people with cutaneous xerosis in the hospital setting. Methods: This is a literature review using the PRISMA tool (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses). The search for studies was carried out in September and October 2020. Articles published in English, Portuguese or Spanish within the last ten years were reviewed, combining the following descriptors and keywords with each other by the Boolean operator AND: piel seca [dry skin], envejecimiento de la piel [skin aging], enfermería [nursing], cuidado de enfermería [nursing care], and cuidados del anciano [elderly care]. Conclusions: A total of thirteen studies made up the corpus, through which the following conditions were found in the national and international literature: presence of areas with altered sensitivity and hydrogen potential, lower turgor and elasticity, immobility, high-age group, pruritus, skin cracking, friction and shearing, as well as the presence of concomitant diseases. It was possible to map the main conditions related to the risk of occurrence of lesions in the elderly people with cutaneous xerosis in the hospital setting, as well as to highlight the need for interventions by nurses to prevent the occurrence of lesions, without forgetting the contributions of the interprofessional team, because the problem has multifactorial causes(AU)

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The skin acts as the first line of defense for the body against external injuries. With aging, the architecture of the skin undergoes intrinsic changes that impair its capacity for repair. In addition, the aging skin is more susceptible to injury by external stimuli, including ultraviolet rays and environmental pollutants. The combination of these factors predisposes the elderly to a variety of dermatological disorders, including xerosis, pruritus, photoaging, eczematous disorders, and tumors. The elderly (>60 years of age) population in India accounted for 8.6% (104 million) in 2011, and the figure has been projected to increase to 19% by the year 2050. It is imperative to identify the pattern of cutaneous disorders in this population as skin care regimens aimed to improve epidermal function have been shown to be effective inthe prevention and treatment of some of these aging-associated cutaneous disorders. Objectives: The objective of the study was to identify the pattern of dermatoses among the elderly population attending the dermatology clinic at a tertiary care hospital in South?east Rajasthan. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study of patients above the age of 60 years who attended the dermatology clinic at a tertiary care hospital in South?east Rajasthan from May 2018 to May 2020. A combination of history, physical examination, and clinical investigations (when appropriate) were used to establish the diagnosis. Results: A total of 210 patients were included in this study. Most patients were between the age group of 60–65 years (40.47%). One hundred and thirty?eight were male (65.71%) and 72 were female (34.28%), with a male to female ratio of 1.9:1. Our study demonstrated that xerosis was one of the most common diagnoses seen in 126 cases (60%), followed by eczematous skin conditions seen in 82 cases (39%). Conclusion: The elderly constitute an important part of the population. Cutaneous disorders in the elderly range from mild disorders such as cherry angiomas to dermatological malignancies. Therefore, it is important to recognize the pattern of dermatosis in this population so that appropriate therapeutic and preventive strategies could be implemented.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background Several treatments are available for skin with advanced photodamage, which is characterized by the presence of actinic keratoses (AK). Objectives Evaluate the efficacy of using sunscreen with photolyase compared to regular sunscreen, as well as to compare the combination of a topical formulation of antioxidants versus placebo in the treatment of advanced photodamage. Methods This was a randomized, double-blind, factorial clinical trial. Participants with AKs on their forearms were randomized to apply regular sunscreen (SC) or sunscreen with photolyase (SC+P) on both forearms during the day. One of the forearms in each group was randomized again to receive topical antioxidants (AOx), and the other forearm received a placebo cream (both for night application). The four groups were SC/AOx, SC/placebo, SC+P/AOx, and SC+P/placebo. The duration of treatment was 8 weeks. Primary outcomes were total AK clearance, decrease in Forearm Photoaging Scale (FPS), and AK severity scores. Secondary outcomes were reduction in AK count, partial clearance rate, and safety. Results Forty participants (80 forearms) were included. All groups showed significant improvement in outcomes at week eight. There were no significant differences between SC and SC+P for either outcome. AOx led to a significant reduction in AK count (22%; p < 0.05). Partial clearance was obtained in 18 (47.4%) forearms treated with AOx and in 9 (23.7%) treated with placebo (p < 0.05). All groups reduced the FPS score, without significant differences among them. Conclusions There is no difference in the treatment of advanced photodamage skin when comparing the use of sunscreen with photolyase and regular sunscreen, and topical antioxidants were more efficient in reducing AK count than placebo. Study limitations Short interval of follow-up and absence of re-evaluation in the absence of treatment were limitations of the present study.

ABSTRACT

Introduction. A fundamental factor in skin aging is cumulative exposure to sunlight. As the photoaging process progresses, collagen and elastic fibers experience greater damage, generating pathologies associated with cancer. The aim of this review is to analyze the evidence that exists in relation to the different situations of cutaneous photoaging and its association with skin cancer. Methodology. A systematic, exploratory review was prepared through a bibliographic search in database managers in health. A total of 18 articles were selected between the years 2019 and 2020. Results. The articles information were grouped into two matrix, the first one that indicates the main themes of photoaging and the relationship with the factors associated with skin cancer, and a second matrix that presents the interrelationship of these factors with the most relevant conclusion of the study. Conclusions. Photoaging is a problem that grows day by day impacting on human life, creating repercussions on a physical and mental level affecting the quality of life. It is necessary to raise awareness about photoprotection mechanisms such as the use of sunscreen, antioxidants , avoid sunlight, use of solar lenses, among others; and in cases where there is already some damage caused by photoaging, choose the best alternative and individualize each patient according to their skin type and diseases associated with age, for a better treatment approach, and thus positively impact the exponential growth that exists today in various types of skin cancer and precancerous lesions
